| Jump Lists New in Windows 7, Jump Lists take you right to the documents, pictures, songs, or websites you turn to each day. To open a Jump List, just right-click a program icon on the Windows 7 taskbar. (You'll also find them on the Start menu.) What you see in a Jump List depends entirely on the program. The Jump List for Internet Explorer 8 shows frequently-viewed websites. Windows Media Player 12 lists commonly-played tunes. Your Jump List missing a favorite? You can "pin" whatever files you like there. Jump Lists don't just show shortcuts to files. Sometimes they also provide quick access to commands for things like composing new eâmail messages or playing music. Improved Windows Taskbar In Windows 7 you can "pin" favorite programs anywhere on the taskbar for easy access. Not crazy about the icon lineup? Now you can rearrange them any way you like by clicking and dragging. Finally, there are new ways to preview windows. Point to a taskbar icon to see a thumbnail preview of open files or programs. Then, move your mouse over a thumbnail to preview the window full-screen. You can even close windows from the thumbnail previews--a big time saver. Snap Ever need to cut through a cluttered desktop and quickly focus on a single window? Just click a pane and give your mouse a shake. Every open window except that one instantly disappears. Jiggle again--and your windows are back. Dual-Core Pentium Power Ready to move up to a dual-core? This Intel Pentium processor-based PC is a good place to start. The Intel Pentium processor is the fast dual-core that lets you surf the web and run multiple applications simultaneously. So you can browse, IM, download music or transfer photos all at once. And use office applications, too. With the 2.1 GHz Intel Pentium T4300 dual-core processor, you'll be able to perform multiple tasks such as digital rendering and gaming all while running virus scan or other background tasks seamlessly. And its Intel 64 architecture is also ready for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, and offers enhanced performance through improved virtual memory. It has a 1 MB L2 cache and an 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB). (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

Excellent Performance but Battery and Adaptor failed within 13 months September 7, 2010 Hemant We purchased this as our family laptop last year from Best Buy... and the we were extremely satisfied with the product until the Battery and the Adaptor failed one by one within 2 weeks. I would suggest that you consider a part-replacement cost of parts such as the adaptor / battery when you make your buying decision. Clearly we missed this part based on our previous puchases of an ACER laptop and TOSHIBA laptop. We have been using these for 4 years and 1 yrs now with no issues what so ever. We hope this helps you make a better purchase decision. Thanks.
A good computer August 27, 2010 Myysteryy I got this laptop about a month ago, and so far it has been great for me. It connected easily to my home network, and I was able to quickly download and/or install all the programs that I want for it. It runs most programs very smoothly and quickly. I have not used the webcam for much, only for a little bit of testing, but it seems to work great so long as you are not in a dimly lighted room.
Obviously this is not a gaming laptop, so I would not expect it to run high-end games on full graphics, but it runs my emulators and other games excellently on normal graphics. I have had one minor problem with this, when the display driver stops responding for a moment. It only happens when I am playing games, and even then it happens seldom. At first I was worried by this problem, but my brother, who is a computer programmer, assured me it is not something to worry about. Having said this, I would not recommend it for anything other than light gaming, and probably not with newer games.
For the most part, the laptop stays very cool, and the fans, when they do come on, are pretty quiet. The touchpad can occasionally get a little warm with prolonged use, and the bottom can get a little warm when sitting on your lap for a long time, but it is not warm enough to cause concern or a need to stop using the computer. I have noticed, though, that with prolonged use when it gets very warm, the touchpad can from time to time be a little unresponsive or jerky in motion. It does not happen often and does not last more than a few seconds, so cannot be described as more than a minor nuisance. Another thing, I have noticed is that the touchpad does not have a scroll bar on the side of it. This takes some getting used to, and can be annoying, but I have become accustomed to it and it no longer bothers me.
I must say, the glossy finish around the keyboard does look nice, but as one would expect it does attract fingerprints and smudges. The finish on the outside of the computer also attracts the occasional smudge, but there are few that do not.
The screen is beautiful, but with bright light behind it can be a little reflective, though this should not be a problem unless an application or movie has dark colours.
The keyboard is a good size and easy to type on. I especially like the controls at the top of it for volume, screen brightness, and even to pause, fast forward, or rewind a movie.
All in all, this is an excellent laptop for somebody who will use it for simple applications, internet browsing, and maybe light gaming. It definitely is not built for heavy gaming, but it will do very well for everyday usage.
My last Dell purchase--There's a reason there are more 1-star reviews than all other reviews! August 15, 2010 Shawn St John (Houston, TX) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My wife and I have been loyal Dell customers over 10 years and four machines. All our previous machines have performed well and we have never had much reason to call customer service for anything. The few times we did (years and years ago) were reasonably pleasant experiences, though. My impression of Dell has always been that they are a solid company that produces solid products.
Not now.
This laptop, which is my wife's, has been nothing but a nightmare from day one. Pathetic battery life, hardware and software issues, trackpad problems, cursor jumping around, intermittent wireless problems, a shoddily-made machine with flimsy screen hinges that easily break.
Dell's customer service has been the absolute worst experience I have ever had with any company in my entire life. I started out trying to return the unit, but quickly found out that they count the number of days that you have had the computer as starting on the day you order the unit, not the day you receive it, so I was two days past the last day I could return the unit. After being transferred back and forth between two different departments who each thought the other department was supposed to help me, I finally found someone who understood the issue and said he would work on getting special approval to return the unit and then call me back. He also sent me an email. He never called back, never responded to emails, never answered the phone, never returned calls. Anyone else I talked to acted like they knew nothing and told me I could not return the unit. Then I tried to appeal to their business sense, by trying to exchange the unit for a higher model (figuring that if they saw I wanted to pay them more money, they would forgive the 2-day thing).
It took me two more weeks of calling every day to find a guy in their corporate customer service group who (even though he shouldn't have even helped me) agreed that what I wanted to do made good business sense and would help the company hold onto a loyal customer. It took him two more weeks to get what he told me was internal approval for the return (their system only allowed them to process it as a return, not a repair or replacement). He even CC'd me on the email where the manager approved the return and gave him instructions on how to process it. I was told I would receive a return code and instructions on how to return the unit for credit. A week went by--nothing. I called and emailed the guy over and over. No response. I finally got someone else who's email address was on the approval email to respond, who explained that the person who approved the return was in one of two different departments who had to approve the return. He said what everyone else always told me--that he would personally take responsibility for resolving my case. He gave me a phone number that was supposedly his direct number and an email. Never heard from him again. The phone number went to a generic mailbox.
After months of getting the runaround and taking every my lunch hour every day to sit on the phone while eating a sandwich, I simply gave up and decided it just wasn't worth it for a $560 laptop. We are already shopping for a replacement after 7 months of owning this thing. Guess who we won't be buying it from.
I'm not a fan. :( July 25, 2010 A. McCartney (NC, USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought my Inspiron 1545 last October when I had major hardware issues with my last laptop that couldn't be fixed (the laptop was four years old and the parts were not manufactured anymore), and I have had problems with it from less than a month after I bought it until now. I have had to replace my DC port twice - and I'm not just a klutzy person. I've never dropped my laptop, I unplug the power cord nicely, etc. and I still have problems with this. For reference, I had my previous laptop for four years and never had to replace the DC port once. I also have had software issues with this computer - I once spent two hours on the phone with customer support wondering why my keyboard wasn't working, and it turns out there was spyware on my laptop. Um... what? I've never had spyware cause the keyboard to stop functioning in any other computer I've used or owned, so that one was definitely new. Recently, my Inspiron has started giving me the "Plugged in, not charging" message when I plug it in, and tapping the computer or wiggling the power cord is fixing it so far, but I sense my third DC port repair in less than a year coming up. I'm not pleased with my purchase and I wish I'd taken it back the first time I'd noticed something was wrong, but I had already started to accumulate programs and files on it and didn't want to start all over. Let's just say I've learned my lesson.
Worst Laptop Ever! July 1, 2010 Redhill (Eastern USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I won't even get in to the customer service...or lack therof. I ordered the laptop in mid-March, received it in late March. Right out of the box it was a nightmare. It was taking 5 minutes + to boot up and within the first couple of days I got the dreaded BSOD. Finally, after 10 days of this, I did the customer service circus and finally got an authorization for a replacement machine. That came in early April and all was fine, initially.
After using it for a couple of weeks (and I use it for the average home computer stuff), I noticed that the touch pad would get very warm - uncomfortabye so - as well as the area around it and usually the keyboard as well. It made it nearly impossible to use unless I was going to type with just the my fingernails and with my hands held at an awkward angle so there's be no chance of touching the wrist rest.
Cue the circus music for another round of customer service. This time, they wanted me to ship the computer to them so they could repair it - which I was unwilling to do. How am I to know they'll actually repair it? It was also going to be at my expense since I was outside of 22 days...I'm not sure what 22 days is about.
After many phone calls, including finally tracking down a number for their corporate offices in Texas (hint, google Dell, Inc. SEC filings if you want a number here in the states), I finally spoke to a regional manager. Yet another replacement was authorized. I received said replacement two days ago. This time it wasn't even a couple of days or weeks before the heating problem started...it was more like a couple of minutes after turning it on.
After still more calls to the regional manager, I was once more reassured that they lack any kind of customer service. I was basically told that I was imagining the heating issue (as well as everyone else on their support forums complaining of the same issue), and they weren't going to do anything about...I'd just have to deal with it.
Well, I took matters into my own hands. I exercised my right to cancel the order. They'll be getting their defective equipment back, I'll be getting refund and purchasing an HP instead.
I have been a loyal Dell customer for over twelve years. Even though their customer service was horrible, I couldn't argue about how good the product was. That isn't the case anymore. It seems all they can produce now is a defective product to match their defective customer service.
